This is Todd checking in from the depths of the great salt lake. Thanks for the opportunity to join, be a part of, and learn more than I ever thought I should know about skateboarding. The topics and conversations here are great. I have been a follower for a while, but finally signed up a month or so ago as a member and thought I should make a formal intro.

I'm not a historian and I don't have a lot of stories to tell, I just love skating. I grew up outside Chicago in the 60's and 70's. We had a long downhill driveway, and holy crap a GT by Grentec gets speed wobbles like a mother. I was also lucky enough to have a dad who let me convince him a large halfpipe in the back yard was a good thing. Midnight sessions Ramones, Black Flag, Husker Du (Bob Mould a favorite), DK's, skating my Variflex El Gato, Blatz, Schlitz, Old Style, road trips to The Turf in Milwaukee; yeah, it was good.

I moved to Utah in the early 80's mostly to be a ski bum, but we also skated home built pipes and bombed gnarly ass hills on home made long boards. I lived in SLO Town central coast CA for a few years in the early 90's and surfed as much as I could, but didn't skate much. Mid 90's was back to Salt Lake and years later I am at the skatepark with some neighbor kids teaching them how to drop in, carve, fakie. How awesome to see the fear, excitement, and determination. To not want to leave the park until you get it. How great is it to pass that on?

I'm close to 50 now and I still skate 3-4 times a week. I travel constantly for business and usually carry a board so I can skate a new place if possible. I have to say I'm proud that skating has allowed me to be part of its culture and "thank you" Wes for being part of that influence on me.

I hope I can contribute here and thanks for my couple minutes of fame.
Forum: Introduce Yourself

Hi all...my name's SKot, and I've been reading this site for a little while but only just now registered.

I was born in 1970 and rode banana boards a few times in the earlier days, but really started skating as a lifestyle in 1985. First board was a Santa Cruz Special Edition 5-ply, no concave, Krypto Star Trac wheels. I skated through high school (in more ways than one), made a zine called Harsh Realm, and went on to college at Portland State...partly because there was so much good street terrain around it.

As time went by I never quit, even when nearly all my friends did. Slowed down quite a bit, but there's never been a time when I didn't ride transition and street at least occasionally.

In the mid-to-late 80s I was always fascinated by the equipment and boards of the 60s and 70s, since they had pretty well disappeared by then and were considered obsolete or kooky. But I kept my eyes out for the occasional thrift store find, and got some great old boards that way.

In the early 90s, I picked up some NOS 70s stuff from a couple of shops that were either moving or closing. That along with my thrift store finds started my little collection. Some of it is on display at Cal Skate in Portland.

I've been a member of the Skullandbones forums for quite a while, which tends to focus on 80s/90s boards. I've been checking out Bulldog Skates for a while since it seems to be a better place to talk about 60s/70s equipment. I have a few things to unload as well, and this seems like a good place for that. Looking forward to finding out more...

--SKot

Forum: Introduce Yourself

Mistakenly put this in someone else's post, didn't understand how it worked. Deleted that and starting again. Hopefully this is how the Introduction is done.

My name is Paul, I am from Philadelphia. Started skating in the early 70's on homemade boards. My first real skateboard was a second hand clay wheel 'Duke Kahanamoku' that had seen the better part of a decade of use before my father presented it to me. Needless to say I was hooked. In the late 1970's I was skating the indoor Philadelphia skateboard park and traveled several times to other parks as opportunity arose. One of the most notable was Cherry Hill. Ate up the antics of the Dog Town Z-Boys crew.

Jay Adams was my favorite.

Went away to college and returned to retrieve my gear to find that my Mother gave away my two top decks to her gal pal's sons. Lost a Powell Bowel Rider and a G&S Team Rider, and was left a Logan Earth Ski oak plank that rode like a shopping cart. Still pissed 25 years later.

I am 49 years old now and trying to stay in the loop. Still surf, snowboard and have been doing some longboarding but I want to get back to my Bowl Riding Roots. Currently recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured distal bicep tendon so I am down for several month but when I come back I am going to FDR park and hopefully don't kill myself.

Forum: Introduce Yourself
