A storm packing 170 mph winds was bearing down on the southern end of Japan's Okinawa Island, where locals and U.S. military personnel stationed at several bases were quickly stocking up and battening down.

Sanba, dubbed a "super typhoon" by meteorologists, is the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane. Named storms west of the international dateline in the Northwest Pacific Ocean are called typhoons, not hurricanes.

After swiping southern Okinawa this weekend, Sanba is projected to make landfall in South Korea with winds still above 100 mph.

"The center will pass close to Okinawa this weekend and then Sanba, in a less-intense but still potent state, is expected to reach South Korea Sunday night or Monday," weather.com reported.

On Okinawa, the Stars and Stripes news website for U.S. military personnel was reporting that military commissaries were packed with people buying food and emergency supplies.

"We’re already seeing/feeling Super Typhoon Sanba’s most outer bands," the report stated. "If it’s sitting outside the garage, put it inside. If the garage door is still open, shut it. If the trampoline is still up, take it down."

Up to a foot of rain was forecast for the area.

Yeah, thanks, I'll have to bring some stuff in from outside and batten down again. Most place here are built solid with concrete so we should alright, just have to stay inside.

Just got out of the water and getting ready for work. This typhoon is trippy, This morning really small near home, went with a friend over to the pacific side thinking there'd be good surf but nothing???????? came back, checked closer to home again and it was shoulder high and pouring rain, paddled out, rained off and on and had a blast! sorry no pics cause the pouring rain when we checked it.

It's supposed to hit us tomorrow, so hopefully some surf next week!

Watching the news now, and it looks like some wind/rain and about the same as the last one. The track continues to show it headed straight up to Korea....Kyushu will get some rain - Kagoshima will suffer with that. Okinawa should have some good waves late today (Pacific side) and Monday, Tuesday.

How'd you all come through? Looks like it was a lot of wind, without much in the way of rain.
Kyushu area CPA was about 80NM. Lots of wind, little rain. News showed there was rain in Miyazaki/Kagoshima/Oita areas.

Karatsu will probably pick up Tuesday, and also the southern coast Kumamoto, Kagoshima.

Hope you are safe and surfing!

Karatsu might be good depending on the winds, I'd check #4's

We got alot of rain, but so far shitty surf since it past, went looking this morning and the winds are all wrong, it's all blown out, some places had some guys out but I it didn't seem worth to me. I heard the pacific side was flat, maybe alright way up north though?

Maybe tomorrow?

I was thinking that Karatsu would be blown out.......Northern Oki on the Pacific side should be alright. Tomorrow or later today should be better.
