Being new to BDS, Im not too knowledgable on the background to some of the art. Can anyone tell me the origin of the 'mask' below? Ive seen it on several BDS decks and also, from memory on the wall of an indoor halfpipe - cant remember where!

Thanks (thanks to cretinhopper selling the flat pigs from where I lifted the image, good luck with the sale, awesome boards)

Rick Griffin was inspired by Hopi indian ceremonial masks.

Murf the Surf? Must be more to it than that?... I didn't read surfer when he was in it (way too young!) but I do recall the character but not the mask, if that's what it is. Whats its connection to Murph and then to BDS? Sorry for being dumb!

"Murphy" was also the cartoon character Rick did in Surfer magazine. "Murf the Surf" was a surfer/criminal I think from Florida.

Yeah, didn't he get caught trying to make off with the Star of India diamond or Sapphire? Anyway, a (surfer)friend of mine was once doing time in the same Florida prison. Seems like I heard recently that he would be getting out, or was coming up for parole?
