Or this kind of tragedy will happen.
Last wave of a perfect set in Lafitenia, France.
Leash broke and my 9'3" Copperfish was drifted directly at the bottom of the cliff were rocks were waiting.
I had this wonderful board for 10 years.
I even had trouble trying to get the board back to the beach cause the waves were hitting the rock quite hard.

So if your leash is old and if you surf close to rocks :
                            BUY A NEW LEASH

Before :

After :

I'm just mad

on the other hand...sometimes it's just better to go with NO leash.
Last saturday I got chopped on a head high wave, went over, and came up wrapped up to a 9' 0"  by a 12 ft knee leash. wrapped up as in pretty much couldn't move away from the board with a set bearing down. scrambled and got the leash off just in time or I would have been toast.
Is there anything else in surfing that is such a double edged sword as the leash? I think not.

Dings are a part of surfing. Boards are meant to be used and abused. It sounds like the session was good and the dings came in honor not disgrace.

I use a little 7' comp leash on all boards in waves under 6'. Leashes are a drag.....

X2 but...glad it was the board and not our guy.
Leashes...can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

Yes, of course, dings are part of surfing. But here, it's no dings, it destruction.
Not quite the same ....

That's indeed a beauty of a surfboard with an interesting shape. And after ten years of use and many, many waves with it, I can understand, that it does hurt to have it beat up like that. Are you going to repair the damaged parts, Fred ?

That sucks, bro. Although the board will never be the same aesthetically, a skilled ding repair guy can do wonders with that. My 9'6" suffered a similar tail bongo when my cat decided to climb into the rafters in my garage, and down she came. Too bad it didn't land on the cat. I'm not the most skilled glassman by any means. But with some clamps and shims, I was able to get it water tight, and not looking much worse for the wear. I was disillusioned at first inspection, but it worked out. She still rides good to this day.

Make sure your leash is long enough. We were on the Outer Banks several years ago as tropical storm Fran slowly approached. For a week the wave increased a foot per day. On the fourth day I dove off the front on a close out tube. Well much to my surprise the short leash slingshot the 9'6" into my midsection resulting in two cracked ribs. Had to surf three more days in larger surf crying like a baby, but had to go. It was that good.

Sorry about your board. What a drag

The board is going to be repaired.
A friend of mine is a master shaper in traditional surfboard (have a look here http://retrolongboards.wordpress.com/).

He hates doing repairs like most of shapers, but he has been kind enough to understand that i needed to have that board fixed.

About surfing with no leash. It's such a pleasure, when you surf beach break. But when you surf near rocks, it's too risky unless you're KS or Joel Tudor.

I'll post pics on the board when it's done.

And thank's for the kind words.

Great looking Board, love them color's..
My 1st job was ding repair & making loops with fiberglass over a taped pencil for attaching the leash....

It really sucks about your board, but it appears that it will be in good hands. The dude you linked has some cool stuff.

Beautiful board, glad you got a guy who will help you out with it!  How old was the leash out of curiousity?
