Ever since DT reissued the Triplane, which was a pretty nice reissue, I've been asking them off and on for the last year if the Airbeam was coming and when. So I sent another message last night and Lance Dalgart finally responded by saying,

Hi Charles,

This is a complex task, we were planning on working with Paul at PS last month to refine it….. but he got injured snowboarding. It is on top of our list, but for now it might be months away.

Thank you for following up.

Anyways, just thought I'd give y'all an update unfortunately with little real news. Either way, it's good to know its on their radar!

Thanks for the update.  I've been wondering if this board would ever materialize.

Well at the very least it's still on DT's radar and that's great news!
Hope the injury wasn't too bad?

Yes, it would be a trip if they got it done. He said in a follow up email that it's the "air beam" part that's tricky, but I'm thinking they know what to do, just have to execute it correctly-maybe Wes remembers how it was done? different than the boulder boards with the cross ply beams. I'm guessing the mold has that profile and it's pressed sheet by sheet? If the mold doesn't still exist in the DT vaults, they'd need to get CNC molds made? I told him I wouldn't be surprised if the first run didn't sell out quickly with guys wanting two, rider and hanger. I'd also expect it to cost a little more, maybe $ 150+?

is the plan for it to be a genuine hollow air beam? or just something solid that looks the same shape? if its going to be like the original then id have thought it would be very time consuming and expensive to reproduce

punkboy, it sounded like to me they were trying to attempt a real genuine hollow air beam, but who really knows at this point? I think that's why he had said it was"a complex task"-I think having the mold made is one thing, but another is pressing it right. I'd love to see some footage of the process! I was just looking around the net for airbeam stuff and ran across a merchant that was at one point selling it or going to list it? check it out, this one doesn't look like it has the airbeams either[frown] just like the triplane with mellow concave, wheel wheels and maybe yorkite?

Wes has often spoken of how difficult it was to make the Airbeam. The board was made by Boulder for DTS.  It was made by pressing two separate 3 ply boards and then pressing those two pieces together.  It was a very tricky process and took a lot of trial and error.  Here is a good article on how the OG Airbeam was made https://disposabletheblog.typepad.com/disposable_random_essays_/2009/12/a-boulder-boards-time-line.html.  It will be a real trick if Dogtown could pull this off again with actual hollow beams.

it would be awful if it did end up like in that advert and just a concave version or similar, it really needs to be a proper replica to justify being called an airbeam

Here’s what he said last about ithe construction of it—sounds like the real deal👍

Hi Charles,

Yes it will have the AirBeam in the construction. That is part of the issue of replicating this particular model.

Paul seems to be on the mend, ran into him last Saturday.

Keep posted on our social channels for any updates.

Thank you,

-ld

Since I don’t have Facebook or any social media sites(except this one), maybe one of y’all might see an update mentioned. Please share if you do!

Peace, TBD

They have a prototype of the Airbeam. They need to work through several issues. I was able to check it out in person about 2 months ago. The Airbeam construction holds many secrets that make the reproduction very difficult. Even Boulder Boards had to reproduce their molds due to the difficulty of pressing those decks with the airbeams. All the geometry of the airbeams make this board one of the most rad builds ever.

Once they get it right -- they too will have to make new molds to keep the tolerances in check. Then you have the Yorkite and colors, the variations will be quite rad!
