We're currently saving for a holiday to California so I can surf (longboard) along the coast - I'm sure my son and I can get our skateboards on as hand luggage!!

No chance they can go on as hand luggage, they will have to go in the hold. I've done the trip many times and always take a skate bag which will be classed as sports equipment on some airlines and can go without extra charges.

I may have to pick your brains as I need to keep my Mrs and 11 year old daughter entertained whilst out there too; any advice or recommendations Tony?

Welcome from Sydney. I've just come back from a summer break with perfect 2' longboard swells. Magic.

There's loads to do out there, just depends on what interests them.
