I am a 48-year old ex-pat American who only truly discovered skateboarding this past April with my 11-year old daughter while visiting the local skate park in search of a new hobby to complement her bookworm-ish tendencies. It’s been all about skateboarding since that day and we are both completely absorbed in our new shared hobby. While she has made wonderful progress and recently participated in her first competition, I have bumbled along improving at a rate more in line with an out of shape 48-year old, at least until I took a spill on a mini-ramp and cracked my tibia near the ankle.  So, technically, I have been sidelined by skateboarding longer than I have actually done skateboarding.

However, I remain undeterred. Just a few days ago, I finished up my PT and got a ‘no limitations’ in English from my doctor. A few hours later, my longboard was set up and I was doing some gentle, slow but glorious carves in front of my house. It feels so good to be back on a board. I want to be smart about this and build up strength in my foot and improve my skills to reduce the chances of another serious injury as much as possible. Eventually, I hope to get back to pumping transitions on the miniramp again.

I found this site during my hunt for a new deck that would be a smart choice to get back into skating at the park and have been blown away by the range of cool deck designs that have come from BDS and smitten with the other-worldly art that Wes has adorned them with. I started on a longboard, but the deck I first got for the park was the Dogtown Bigfoot reissue and think a longer BDS deck will soon be in order. I not sure how much I will be able to contribute here beyond exuberance for skateboarding and BDS decks and artwork, but I will do what I can. I have learned a lot lurking for the past few months and hope to ask for advice about my next setup.

Thanks!

Greg

Welcome Greg.  Great story.  I think a lot of us have been injured more than not.  But, we always keep coming back.  I also broke my ankle not long after I started back skating.  Mine was dislocated and required surgery.  Took almost a year to fully recover from that.

Maybe look for a board with concave and at least 32" long.  Lots to choose from.  Skate safe and have fun.

Hello and welcome from Maryland.  Very cool about how you got into this.  And, this site is more than just the awesome artwork from Wes; there's quite a bit of stoke to be shared as well.  So bring all the exuberance you want. [thumb]

And based on your next selection, there's a ton of info on setups available in the Setups forum:

I am really hoping to get that kind of routine going.

Ouch. That is brutal. I assume these things are well known around these parts, but if you still cant put any weight on your foot, I found this to be an enormous upgrade over crutches:

Well, hang in there. It will pass, but boy, there is nothing good about it.

Welcome from NorCal Wine Country, Sonoma County!

Exuberance counts as contribution around here, so keep it coming!
How did your daughter do in her first competition?  If she had fun, she won!

Now, uh, Brian (lox), what is this about you and a tranny?!?!?!  [eek][rofl]

thanks for the idea Greg, but there are few things i do better than heal
i've been back in shoes and walking since week 3, actually stood on my board the other night and kickturned enough times to tell me to very gently get the hell off and go sit down [rofl]

Holy foot-feat, Batman! I mean, at week three after my foot injury, I was semi-concious, bed-ridden, and had barely enough strength to drink chicken broth through a straw. Well, it may not have been that bad, but I certainly wasn't about to put my foot on solid ground, much less a skateboard. Very impressive that you could (and a little scary)!
