The bowls of the old Turf skate park here in Milwaukee have been lying dormant under a concrete floor for 15 years.  But now they have demolished the building that housed the Turf for road construction and the bowls are again exposed, but filled in with stone.  Word spread quickly and 50 guys showed up with shovels tonight and started digging.  If nothing else, we're going to get a good sesh before the bowls are gone for good.  Check out the story here  http://www.fox6now.com/news/witi-100804-turf-unearthed,0,6521408.story.

I heard that a movement has started to save the bowls and the historical society is involved.  When I find out more about that, I'll post it here and maybe you guys can support the movement to save a skateboarding treasure from the 70s.

That's wicked, so good to see so many people digging away. Some of those old photo's are iconic. I would love to ride that clover leaf bowl.

Tony, hijack a plane, grab a shovel and start digging and you can skate the clover (I wish).  Maybe someone will show up with some serious equipment and start digging it out. But, I gotta believe it won't be long before the highway people come in and destroy everything.

Here's some pics from today.

This is the outline of the clover bowl.  I heard the coping was all broken off when they first filled in the bowls.

This is the roll-in for the capsule bowl.

Good work. Makes you wonder how many are left and with just a bunch of labor what could be brought back. but then again, there are so many good new parks out there. who wants to dig out Tea Bowls again?

Wow.....
The Turf.
Kind of odd seeing it in the sunlight....
Kinda makes you want to cry, but keep an eye on the parks that are
around now.
Recognize the fate that could befall them-
I think that is a lesson that could be learned.
Is there a possible future for non-city owned skateparks?
I wonder, other than Vans Orange, and Kona, I mean?
"skatepark archeology"
Cool.

So cool, I liked how the news anchor was saying to get some heavy equipment operators out there to help, I'm surprised no one utilized that excavator to dig it out.

Very well put.

People who skated it know its faults, its ability to humble you, its ability to injure you, its abilility to kill you.  It was not the best park by a long shot, but it means A LOT to a lot of people.

I came prepared to skate...

...but it was not to be.

When I got there, a construction worker had just finished filling everything back in and then covered the whole site with heavy concrete rubbble, so it looked like this:

Not much chance of digging it out by hand now.  Also, they are going to post no trespassing signs and will ticket anyone coming on the property.  While it was nice having the news story, the authorities were watching it too and, apparently, got on it right away.

I talked to the construction guy and he was cool.  He showed me the plans for the highway ramp and it does not appear that the ramp construction will overlap the park, unless they do a ton of grading next to the ramp.  However, as I found out later, the state department of transportation bought the property for a handsome sum and intends to use the area where the park is as a staging area for all of the road construction.  After that, in 2013, the land could end up back in the hands of the City of Greenfield.

After talking to the construction guy, old skate rats started showing up, one after the other.  One of them was a friend, Jeff, who manages the 4Seasons Skate Park here.  He was one of the lucky few who got there early enought this morning to skate the lip slide gully that was dug out last night.  (Yeah, I know Dan.  It's gay ).  Jeff said the concrete was in good condition, but it was slick because it was wet.  As GreenDude mentioned, those skaters were quickly dispatched by the police in the early morning hours.

A TV crew showed up for a follow-up story.

Then the Greenfield mayor showed up.

He was cool, but basically said that the situation is out of his hands until the department of transportation is done with the property.

A few other pics.

Only one edge of the clover and one edge of the keyhole were still visible.  All of the tiles have been picked clean.

We helped Jeff load this slab on a truck so he could take it down to 4Seasons.

We're trying to think of ways to save the park, but it doesn't look too good.  But, there is a lot of support right now, so we will keep trying.

Yeah, I saw Star Wars not long after I started skating.  Then, not long after that they built Surfin' Turf.

Funny, my buddy who helped shovel out that gay lipslide gully last night and then never got to skate it said today that we could probably build the same gay thing in a weekend.  But, he was glad he showed up to help so he could see all the skaters and crews of different generations pitching in.

I got an email from OSSonline today with a couple of links, and the city mayors contact info. The local boys are trying to get the Turf recognized as a landmark and preserved.

@ work now and can't pull up my personal Email, I'll try and get the info up tomorrow.

Be kinda cool if they could pull it off, but looks like a bit of an uphill battle.

Good.  That ought to give me enough time to rig it with explosives.  But, help us dig before you try to take the statue.  Oh, and come skate with Duane and Mike V. here on Monday at a "good" skate park.
