I can't remember specifically which I started first, but Surfing and Skateboarding have always been hand in hand for me.

Gliding? How's this? That day was soooo glassy.

That's a shot of me in BigDaddy territory, Frisco, NC.

I have always wondered how hard it is to make the transition to surfing from skating. I have always wanted to try surfing and since I am older now I figure I better get to it. I was in SD years ago in the Navy but I had other interests at the time. Besides swimming , drowning etc, what are the major differences ?

Thanks for any info

OFG,
Surfing, IMO has a much steeper learning curve than skateboarding. (You gotta learn how to catch the wave.)

BUT the payoff is incredible!!!

Imagine the feeling you get when you are doing a nice carve at the bottom of a wall of a pool/park/bank, up to the top and back down. Really intense, right? In surfing, THE WALL IS MOVING!!!

There are very few sports where you are moving on something that also is moving. It is almost impossible to explain, you kinda have to experience it.

In addition, even on the same day, at the same break, each wave can be a little different.

I was lucky enough to spend most of my summers at the Jersey Shore, where I learned to surf. You dogs in Cali have it made. Now I'm near DC, and the closest break is 2.5 hours away. I sure wish I was closer to the water, but the skateparks are closer, so I'm trying to substitute with that...

Anyhow, if you get a chance, you should try it, but try to hook up with someone with experience.

Chris- I feel you...that dvd is next on my list. I felt the same way when I saw a snip-it of what Danny Way did on the DC mega-ramp...made my hair folicals pop like..well, you all know. I'm not huge on street only, but my sidewalk is free & right outside my door...that DC video is worth it just for the DW footage.

OldFatty- Queue has it right with the 'partner system' in the water as a good bet. Find a cool spot that's not heavy on attitude and people will surprise you with good vibes and help and hooting! Go for it, you won't regret it...just be prepared for tired arms from paddling! Besides the upfont cost of surfing...there is NO drawback to it. I just started like 3 years ago and I'm 31...I only regret not selling a kidney earlier in life to start.(I started in New Hampshire..yeah, NH...(anybody from Cinnamon Rainbows out there, you guys are the best!)Now I'm in Charlotte, NC...yup, 3hrs from the coast.

Good luck, get some sand on your toes that's not in griptape! >

Queue,

Now your making me go back to my photo and vid vault for some memories of the Banks! I used to live in Kill Devil Hills for a few seasons. There is absolutely no place better to surf on the entire east coast than the Outer Banks!!!

Rich in MI.

in the beginning, surfing was the root of pretty much all of skating, but now, the circle has come 'round and it is SKATING that is a prime influence on surfing. to wit; the airs of christian fletcher et al.--ollies. and the sliding tail out cutbacks(vs.old school full rail).as well, the emphasis on 'tricks' in competition surfing owes much to skating.

Nice shot Rich!

I love that break, except when it gets so big that you can't paddle through cuz all the water coming off the sandbar. It was such an eye opener the first time I surfed something other than an East Coast beach break...

How am I gonna paddle out through all that???

Uh, through it? Just use the channel! (Duh)

Billabong Oddysey is one of the sickest features I have ever seen. Goosebumps through the whole thing.
