That's terrible to hear about any skateparks closing. People say that skating is headed for another glut. I sure hope that's not true. Even if it is true I'm gonna pretend it's not happening because that's too depressing to think about. Seeing that in the early 80's was hard to accept.

My "theory" (term used when I could, very possibly be speaking out of my ass), is that the pay parks are losing business due to the increasing numbers of public, free parks. I think the skateboarding world is just changing, again. I don't think that the public parks are going to turn into ghost towns anytime soon.

I'm sure the pay parks will fare a lot better in areas with inclement weather. There's a reason it costs more than the GNP of some small countries to buy a house in Southern California, it's called Shorts in January.

It is true. I love hanging out at the music store. Hitting the coffee shop. I let the wife hit the dress shops and then skating for a few hours finished off with a trip to wolfgang Pucks restraunt down at the other end of the mall. I am going to miss that. Without Van's being there it is just another mall that is a pain in the ass to get in and out of.

The Orange and Orlando Vans are staying open. Not sure about the Potomac Vans... it should have at least 2 years left. As for the rest of them, the outlook does not look good.

Vans Orlando will probably stay open because all the other city parks in O-Town are also charging fees to skate. If you pop for the $25 annual membership (used to be $50), Vans still offers a decent session value at $5-$7 depending on the day of the week.

The Orlando Skatepark (OSP) is reasonable at $6 per session (less if you get a membership) but Oviedo is still charging $12 per sesh for non-residents. Lake Mary is only $3 but it is very small with only one sweet bowl and a small street course.

At least Vans lowered their rates after the new parks opened. Vans Orlando gets a lot of tourist skaters too which is a year-round thing. Also, there is a heavy concentration of BMXicans which keeps the park full on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Of course, I have no idea what the overhead is for Vans. It's got to be huge since they are located in a mall. Makes you wonder if they are at least breaking even especially after they lowered their fees.
